Bible Teaching

So, you want to know how to be an effective Bible teacher? There are a few possible reasons you searched for and found this page:

• Maybe you have been teaching for years and you just want to add fresh aspects to your teaching approach.
• OR perhaps you have just been asked to teach an established class and you feel overwhelmed and clueless as to what to do.
• OR you know you are a good teacher BUT you feel that you aren’t being the best you can be for God. In other words, that little “something” is missing.
• OR maybe you are here for completely different reasons.

I have been teaching the Bible for over 20 years and I have been teaching others to do so as well. When I have conducted internet searches for “Bible study teacher training,” I am usually disappointed with the results. While there are some good sites out there, many don’t really provide what I am looking for. I want (and I think you do too) a site that takes me to a deeper level of understanding the Bible teaching task. I want practical steps to take, effective Bible teaching methods, and more how-to material.

Too often the search reveals results like “how to prepare a Bible study lesson plan” or “how to teach Bible study to adults.” These are close to what we want but, at least for me, are not specific enough. I am looking for real Bible teacher training that is specific and detailed, BUT will not consume my already crazy-busy schedule. Can you relate?

So, how do we teach the Bible more effectively?

 

In order to be a more effective Bible teacher we need to learn some things that we may not have considered before. Things like:

• The difference between the “what” and the “why” of a biblical passage
• The spiritual relationship between a deep study of a Bible passage (exegesis) and the meaning for the modern listener (hermeneutics).
• How our presuppositions might be working against us as we prepare a Bible study
• How to know the needs of our listeners and/or students
• How to work through a Bible passage without being drawn away from the BIG truth of a passage by overly focusing on what seems to be spiritual

The above list contains just a few of the things we need to learn if we really want to take our teaching of God’s word to the highest levels.
